Karen has over 25 years’ experience as a practicing Attorney at Law, in the Caribbean. She spent her first seven years in the field of law in her native country, Guyana, South America at the law firm deCaries Fitzpatrick and Karran where she became a partner. In the year 2000, she migrated to Barbados and joined the law firm Aequus Chambers in Bridgetown Barbados where she specialized in banking, property, offshore and trust and estate matters. She then merged with Hastings Attorney-at-law until 2011 when she started her own firm, Perreira Law that in 2015 rebranded and is now known as InterCaribbean Legal.

Karen has developed a very large commercial litigation and international business practice. She has attracted a clientele of individuals, family businesses and private and public companies. She works for various financial institutions advising on banking law and loans for both domestic and offshore borrowers and private investors. Her portfolio of clients includes international insurance companies, large construction companies, property developers, and HNWIs seeking investment opportunities in Barbados.

She is also a certified anti-money laundering specialist with the Association of Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (ACAMS) and has obtained a CIArb Certificate in the Introduction to International Arbitration.

She is a member of the International Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, and an executive Committee member of the Barbados Branch. She joined the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists and The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. Rene is an experienced Attorney-at-law with a broad civil and commercial practice in Barbados and the OECS, appearing before Courts at all levels in these jurisdictions. His focus is on contractual and property disputes, personal injury claims, contentious probate; employment disputes; fraud, asset tracing, recovery, and enforcement actions; insolvency and restructuring; and director and shareholder disputes. Rene also provides client advisory in corporate financing; insurance and reinsurance; and high-value contractual arrangements in Barbados and throughout the OECS.

Rene previously served as the Litigation Team Leader, at a leading commercial firm in the BVI. He also appeared as lead counsel before the BVI Commercial Court and Court of Appeal in disputes which primarily involved company management, corporate governance, and insolvency.

Rene attended the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus. He completed undergraduate courses of study, in Economics and Law. During his time as a student, he actively participated in the public speaking and debating teams. In 2011, whilst at the Hugh Wooding Law School, in Trinidad, he led a team of advocates that won the North-Atlantic Regional Round of the “Fifteenth Annual Stetson International Environmental Law Moot Court Competition” held at the Stetson University School of Law in Tampa, Florida.

Rene enjoys writing. He has contributed to the International Comparative Legal Guide to: Business Crime and to the World Bank’s Doing Business publication, and locally with the Nation’s Business Authority and the Business Barbados online publication.

Akira J. Husbands

Akira attained her Bachelor of Laws degree in 2014 from the University of the West Indies with honours. She then attended the Hugh Wooding Law School where she spent 2 years and was awarded a Legal Education certificate in 2016 on the Principal’s Roll of Honour.

During her time at the Hugh Wooding Law School Akira was an active member of the Human Rights Committee which raised funds for charitable purposes. During her second year of studies Akira was selected to participate in the Intellectual Property Law Clinic conducted by the Ministry of Legal Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago.

Akira was admitted to practise law in Barbados and became a member of the Barbados Bar Association in 2016. Since then her practice areas have included Litigation, Personal Injuries, Estates, Conveyancing, and Intellectual Property.

Chad Skinner graduated from the Hugh Wooding Law School, Trinidad and Tobago in 2020. It was there where he obtained his Legal Education Certificate, held the position as Treasurer of the Cultural and Entertainment Committee, and participated in both the Intellectual Property and Alternative Dispute Resolution specialist clinics. After graduating Chad was awarded the privilege of an internship at The Barbados Supreme Court.
